Two authorities are worth going to directly rather than relying on anything written here: OSHA’s trenching and excavation requirements for anything involving an open excavation, and the national 811 utility locating service before any digging at all. Our own rundown of the safety habits that matter most around these machines is a starting point, not a substitute for either.
