A small gas engine like this one is about as simple as machinery gets, and its problems are simple to match. Nearly all of them start with stale fuel. Gas left in a carburetor for a few months turns to varnish, the varnish blocks the jets, and the machine that ran fine last fall won’t fire this spring. Stabilizer before it sits is the whole prevention. If you’re already past that, the bowl comes off with hand tools and the jets clean up with carb spray and a few minutes of patience.

Break-in hardware matters more on a machine this small, not less. There’s less mass in the frame, so a bolt working loose shows up as slop you can feel in the controls faster than it would on a heavier machine. Go around the track frames, the bucket linkage and the swing hardware inside the first ten or twenty hours and keep going until nothing moves. Track tension is the last one, and it’s the one people get backwards. On a small undercarriage the temptation is to crank the track down tight so it can’t come off.
