A small diesel doesn’t have a spark plug — it lights the fuel with heat from compression, and on a cold morning there isn’t enough of it. That’s what the glow plugs are for. Turn the key to the run position, wait for the glow light to go out, and then crank. Skipping that step and grinding the starter is how people decide a perfectly good machine “won’t start in the cold.”

The second one is running the tank dry. On a gas engine that’s an inconvenience. On a diesel it pulls air into the injection system, and the engine will crank all day without catching until you bleed that air back out through the bleed screw the manual points you to. Hardware works loose in the first twenty or thirty hours as everything seats, so go around with a wrench and re-torque the track frame bolts, the bucket linkage and the swing hardware early rather than finding a bolt gone. And track tension wants to be set to the number in the manual, not cranked down as tight as it will go — an over-tight track chews through final drive bearings and stretches the chain, which is a far more expensive problem than the one you thought you were preventing.
